Hasta Luego Mis Amigos

‘C’ and I are off to the UK tomorrow for 10 days, and then I will continue on to Sweden for a few more weeks, while poor ‘C’ has to come back to Mexico to work ….ahhh the benefits of being a lady of leisure! :) So it will be rather quite month here on the Travelling Chopsticks as I am not entirely sure how often I will get the chance to write or the urge to write for that matter…sometimes it is just nice to enjoy the ‘now’.

So, in the meantime – enjoy this picture that ‘C’ took when I brought him to San Juan market on Monday. Of all the things I showed him…I wonder why this caught his attention?!  ;)

Apparently you can use sex appeal to sell anything here in Mexico!

When things go wrong!

We all have our ‘off’ days where nothing seems to come together in the kitchen – and I had mine last night. ‘C’ came home from yet another business trip, and I really wanted to put together a lovely meal for him – he has been eating out nearly every night, and so have I this week, and I thought a good home cooked meal would be the perfect way to spend the evening together.

I decided to make roast Cornish hens with roast carrots and bacon as well as sautéed some potatoes with rosemarry…all of which sounds really good – but somehow I missed the mark. To be honest I am not really sure what I did wrong, but the chicken turned out to be rubbery and fatty, and the carrots undercooked and oily – but at least the potatoes  and gravy were well received. Puebla: City-Break

It was Memorial day last Monday – which meant that ‘C’ got the day off. I love the fact that he gets both Mexican and American holidays off – as it means we can get the chance to organise lots of little weekend trips to explore this amazing country we are living in.

So, last weekend, we, together with a few friends of ours decided to spend a night in Puebla an absolutely beautiful city about a two hours drive East of Mexico City. For anyone living in Mexico City, or visiting for a few days I would highly recommend taking the opportunity to go and explore this old city. The drive is incredibly easy (although it may not be the most interesting of drives) and relatively fast, in fact ‘C’ and I have said that we would actually consider doing it as a day trip.

Lovesushi – Review

For those of you living in Mexico City – this is a great little nugget for you!  If you ever crave fresh Japanese food that is delivered straight to your door (which I do all the time) – you have to try Lovesushi  www.lovesushi.com.mx

Lovesushi is a relatively new company here in Mexico City, which, as you can tell by the name specialises in (and loves) sushi, however they do have a much broader menu than sushi alone  – and they deliver! Keep Reading

From Exploding Ovens to our Trip to Peru

Well this weeks cooking efforts was abruptly halted on Sunday when our temperamental old oven decided she had had enough and blew-up. Yes, you read it right – our gas oven had a small explosion!! Luckily, the only casualties of the blast were ‘C’s ‘ leg hair – which were singed to black stubs, and the stench of burnt hair permeated through the apartment! Keep Reading

What Lurks Around Corners…

There has been so many things I have wanted to write about the last few weeks, however my brother has been in town, and between starting ’round 2′ of Spanish lessons and sight-seeing around the city – I just couldn’t find the time.

However, something unfortunate happened to us the other day and I have been battling with the idea of whether or not I should write about it – but this is after all a blog that is meant to record my experiences of living in a new city and sometimes the bad comes with the good! Keep Reading

Casa Colonial Bed & Breakfast in Oaxaca

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

During our stay in Oaxaca, we stayed at Casa Colonial – a hotel/B&B that was recommended to ‘C’ by one of his colleagues. Casa Colonial is owned and run by an American woman who has been living in Oaxaca for almost 20 years. She and her husband bought the casa from another American couple and have obviously poured their heart and soul into the place – tragically, her husband was killed in a car accident a couple of years ago on his way back from the States to Oaxaca – and she decided to continue running the hotel on her own.

Oaxaca – my thoughts

Over New Years, ‘C’ and I decided that we wanted to get out of Mexico City for a while and have a bit of a holiday (needless to say my life at the moment is a constant holiday, but ‘C’ works damn hard and needed a break!). We decided we would drive down to the city of Oaxaca (don’t be fooled by the spelling, as its pronounced more along the lines of Wah-hak-ah) as its meant to be one of Mexico’s most interesting cities. Flying high – Airlines in Mexico

Before I moved to Mexico City, I honestly thought that ‘C’ and I would be traveling all over Latin and South America. A weekend in Costa Rica, pop down to Argentina for a week and explore Buenos Aires…or even attempt the Inca trail…

However I have quickly come to realise that this will not be the case – for two very valid reasons. The first is that Latin and South America are huge…yes, yes I know that is an incredibly obvious statement to make – but I never realised how big it and what exactly the distances were like. Living in Singapore, South East Asia is at your finger tips and a weekend trips to Bali, Bangkok and Thailand was a reality. Keep Reading

Christmas away from family

In my 28 years of existence, I have only ever spent one christmas away from my family and that was last year. ‘C’ had just moved to Mexico from DC and it was the only holiday time I had from work to come and visit (Singapore to Mexico is a long and expensive journey, so I wanted to stay as long as possible). Although feeling guilty my family understood, and I was incredibly excited about seeing ‘C’ again after four months so it was easy to push my guilty conscience aside.

This is going to be my second Christmas away from my family, and I must admit it feels awful knowing my parents are going to spend Christmas alone. Christmas in my family has always been exceptionally important. We are a family who travel extensively, but no matter where in the world we find ourselves we have always made it home for Christmas there was a time when all four of us (my parents, my brother and myself) were all living on different continents let alone different countries.
